Character Development
I sketch a little bit about my idea and what I have in my mind. A little bit of my storyline but I need to polish it a little bit to make it smoother.
Next, is the Monkey King costume wearing by a funny little Chinesse boy.
Then, a nice little Indian girl with her snake costume.
Lastly, A fun and happy go lucky girl from Scotland wearing her deer costume.

Colour Test on the Character Design
I do some modification when I'm drawing it back in the computer. I put some colour to test and have a feel about this character. It still in the development stage so there will be a lot of changes to do.
I also have draw a little bit of storyboard for my story but not finish it yet. I will update it later for the final one.

Character Design Reference
I do some research on how cute the kids when they are wearing an animal costume. So I come across with an idea of kids story that involve with different culture but have common in it. So I try to combine 4 culture into this story that come from Southeast Asia, China, India and Scotland.

Here come the idea where in Southeast Asia we have our own Malayan Tiger so I imagine that a little girl wearing tiger costume with the character that curious about everything.
I've got the monkey for Chinesse animal costume based on their own legendary animal of Monkey King. The character will be a little boy who like to play a lot and funny.
Then, I search for sacred animal for Indian culture and I come out with an idea to use a snake as a costume of a little girl. She will be so fragile and like a little baby.
Lastly, for the Scotland I choose the deer in my story. She will have a red hair and a very fun and happy person.

Influence of Lotte Reiniger
Lotte Reiniger’s animation is so emotional and memorable through the use of outstanding cut out animation even though she was simply retelling well known fairy tales. Her sense of colour and attention to every detail of each cut out puppet, made her work recognisable and established within the industry. I use this two book as my reference to understand more on shadow puppet from the west.

The use of
expression of body language in the characters been paired with the use of
colour to express the characters emotions and thoughts.
The creation of
emotion in every character came from the imagination and expression of the
writers and the animators themselves. Cartoons nowadays are
a huge industry because it has been produce by many animation company. Some of the
cartoon characters are memorable because
of the personality of the characters themselves
who are more unique, lovable and relate. Here are some example from her cut out animation scene in the fairy tale story telling.

Chinesse Shadow Puppet influence in Kung Fu Panda
It's been a while since I post new update of some work that I'm working at right now. Here is the sample of video that is related to what I'm planning to do for my final projects. I use two scene from Kung fu Panda, and Kung Fu Panda 2 as my reference for Chinesse puppet shadow. I try to adapt the influence from the original shadow puppet that will be transform into 2D animation shadow puppet.
The
unique power of the shadow theater will be develop with the good narrator or
music composition. Music always been use as a background but it merely acts as
some sort of emotion that can cover all the story telling. Shadow
puppet can be made to be more memorable through the representation of their
personality and how they are identified through body gesture and movement.
Example of picture from that scene and it beautifully presented in this movie.

9th October 2015
We learned to use Autodesk Mudbox from Phil on Friday morning and I think it was cool and fun software. We try with different method like sculpting and grabbing tools to get a feel of this object. Then, we had been given a ready sculpting human head for us to start creating a new character.
I try to make it look like Maleficient but I think it will be too far from her character.
I use the grab tool to pinch out and make it look like a horn on her head.
Then, I add mesh and add a new subdivision level to make the stroke more smoother.
Next, I use the sculpture tool to make a texture like a braid hair and also texture on her face.
I use the paint brush tool and apply the colors all over the head.
Now, It is how my character look from front and behind.
To get the symmetrical stroke for both right and left side, I always turn on the mirror. The value of stamp on the sculpture tools also can be increase or decrease using the shortcut key B = size and M = strength. Once I am happy with this I will sent to Maya. And I come out with the name of Aurora and Ariena for this two character that I've already made.

7 October 2015
We had a workshop with DC Thomson the whole Wednesday. They were talking about their plans to redesign their works and they want us to sign a NDA (Non Disclosure Agreement) because they are quite strict with their products.

We begin with talking about the comic that we like the most but frankly I'm not the one who always buy a comic. I either will read it online or just read on the magazine and newspaper. I have read a lot of manga comic online so I like the style of their characters and also the story line.

Then, here we go we start to redesign one of their existing character in the comics. At first we had chose the 'Supercats" comics because of their character are interesting and quite energetic. After the brainstorming and discussion with the member of DC Thomson staff we then change to the 'Four Mary' comic.

We brainstorm all the idea and draw a mind map based on the original idea and also the combination of our own idea. Then, we finally combine a little bit of Four Mary story with the Supercats story.
It was a very fun and impressive day I had at DC Thomson. I learn a lot on how to create a character based on the story line that we had. The brainstorm and discussion make me have a clear idea and everyone were very helpful and respect each other opinions. I hope to see this kind of workshop again in the future. ^_^
